Another year has come and (almost) gone, so it´s about time we look back to all the sad and exciting things that happened in 2016 and at the same time get ready to welcome the new year ahead. A lot happened in 2016: for the world, for Europe and for us Pearls as well.
Europe, our beloved continent, has been shaken in its core by the hand of people who claim to act in the name of their “god” but, in truth, are nothing more than a bunch of gutless cowards. We will always remember the vicious attacks in Brussels, Nizza, Ansbach, Istanbul and, more lately, Berlin.
The balance of the EU has also been put at risk by the results of the referendum in Britain and, recently, in Italy. Since I personally very much believe in our Union and in the values of freedom and non discrimination it represents, I consider the Brexit as the main “fail” of 2016. But I am still hopeful that negotiations between Britain and the EU will lead to a situation where the freedom of goods and of movement will still be guaranteed to young generations who dream of working and studying abroad.
And in November another highly unexpected thing happened: Donald Trump was elected 45th president of the United States, after what was probably the most talked (and twittered) about election campaign EVER. I guess half the world is still asking itself how a man who has never held public office and still has 75 lawsuits outstanding against him, could´ve been elected president of the world´s most powerful country.
Personally, I was mainly disappointed to see that a country like the U.S. is still not ready to accept a woman in the Oval Office, preferring someone who´s been objectifying and offending women during his whole campaign. I suppose the main reason for Trump´s unpredictable victory was the decisive role played by the media; never before has an election been discussed, tweeted about or reposted more. So I guess it´s right when people say that this election has basically been decided by social media, which, in my opinion, are a blessing and a curse at the same time. They grant easy access to unlimited information, but, at the same time, don´t always allow to select the quality of the news and therefore often influence and manipulate people´s opinions. But even though I´ve never been Trump´s biggest fan, I don´t see his election as a tragedy. To a certain extent I can understand why the majority of Americans voted for him. And I hope he will be supported by a competent team and always keep in mind what´s best not only for the U.S., but also for a prosper global economy and peaceful world.
What else happened in 2016?
Brad & Angelina broke up. Prince, David Bowie and George Michael have died. But, on the bright side, Leo finally got his Oscar ;-)
For us Pearls it was a very special year, because that´s when we all met! January the 13th 2016 was the beginning of a beautiful and strong friendship, that has also led, in December, to Viki and me joining Amelie on her blog adventure. We´ve been through everything together: we smiled, we cried, we loved and we lost, we travelled, we worked and studied hard, we ate lots of brunches, we jumped in the sea, we drove for hours, we fought and we made up and we laughed, laughed and laughed once again. “Soulmates”, “sisters from another mister”…whatever you wanna call it: that´s us :-)
Our highlights of 2016 were definitely the trip to Kitzbühel:
Our amazing road trip through Italy (with our dear friend Tiffi from The Pink Macaron always on board, of course):
And many exciting brand collaborations, first of all our dirndl shootings with Anina W and Wirkes (shot by the incredibly talented Tanjusha Chulkova):
But, as they say, all good things come to an end. So this is the time to say goodbye to 2016 and be excited for all the amazing things that the new year holds for us!! I´m so thankful for everything 2016 has given me, it was probably the most intense year of my life (although I always say that ;-) ), but I´m ready to face new challenges, new adventures and new projects in 2017. Every new year is like a clean sheet. That´s the best part. You can start all over, learn from the mistakes of the past and be a better version of you. It´s a new chance you get without even asking for it ;-)
I´ve already made my new year´s resolution. What is yours?
